For the last 20 years, Veneto's statistical office had published its annual report in print. Through co-design, we helped the team create their first interactive report.
A big step for the organisation, and a new way for citizens to access regional statistics.
The report is dense with information, so we tested several ways to reduce the reader's effort and make the experience as comfortable as possible. One of them: putting legends and filters inside the headlines. It reduces visual noise and brings text and charts together.
Never underestimate the power of headlines. We treated headlines as part of the chart, a key tool for exploring and understanding what the data says, and for a smoother reading experience.
Why are legends evil? They aren't, by nature. But they become a problem when the eyes have to jump back and forth between chart and legend to decode shapes or colours. Placing legends close to, or on top of, the charts keeps the reader focused on the content.
The project has two main sections: the economic outlook and the information dashboard. The first focuses on the past year; the second covers a wider range of data, for example series from 2010 and interactive charts at municipal level.
Both were designed as tools to keep knowledge always within citizens' reach.

Official statistics can be precise and pleasant to read at the same time. Do you need to visualize your data too? We're here.
