Data gamification for local water awareness

A data gamification to trigger reflection and awareness on the water crisis and individual consumption habits, created in collaboration with Sarah Doetsch.

the challenge

The water side of the data

We are made of 70% water. Fresh water is just the 3% of the total water on earth, mainly stored in glacierts, which are melting at an alarming rate. Water is a precious resource, and we must take care of it, and being aware of our priviledged position in this planet. Those are the premise on which the project is based on.

the idea

Let the data flow

From the very beginning, we thought about how to turn data into a fun and engaging experience—one that invites both children and adults to reflect on water through water, in a playful and easily replicable way.

The survey with steroids

Floaters, faucets, drippers, tanks, and pipes—designing interactions with liquids always seemed complicated, until the breakthrough came.

We had to use materials provided by a plastic manufacturing company sponsoring the event—a constraint that initially caught us off guard.

Everything changed when we saw the polycarbonate panels: perfect for visualizing columns of liquid data within their inner spaces.

Participation matters

This gave life to a series of themed panels, each displaying data on a specific aspect of water on one side, and posing a question or quiz on the other to guess a related fact.

In addition to being a playful and refreshing activity (after all, it was July), the act of guessing sparked curiosity, prompted questions, and encouraged reflection.

Key to this process was the role of the facilitators, who guided participants through the experience and supported the conversations that followed.

Next steps

This is a project with high potential, both in terms of impact and replicability.

It could easily be adapted for schools, public events, and various other contexts.

We are currently working on designing the post-experience phase—that is, how to build on the awareness participants gained during the event and translate it into concrete actions toward more responsible and informed consumption.
