The colourful side of complexity

Paesaggi Futuri brings together projects and investments across hundreds of municipalities in Tuscany. Different places, funding programmes and timelines generate a complex body of data that needs to be monitored and made accessible to local communities.

The challenge was to move beyond the dashboard as a reporting tool and turn complexity into something people could explore and relate to their territory.

Data as facets

At the core of the system are modular widgets, each revealing a different facet of the projects — budgets, funding sources, territories, themes or progress.

Widgets work independently or in combination, forming a visual vocabulary that can be recombined across the platform depending on what needs to be told.

Same data, different ways in

There is no single way to approach complex information. So we designed three entry points into the same data: an overview for the big picture, a map to explore through proximity, and stories to discover individual projects.

Rather than separate sections, they are interconnected perspectives. People can move between data, places and stories, creating their own path through the information.

A playlist made of data

Stories turn widgets into guided narratives, selecting and sequencing only those needed to understand a specific project.

We think of them as playlists made of data: different arrangements of the same material. From each story, people can move back into the wider dataset, its location or related projects.

Making the invisible visible

Data about public investments exists, but being available doesn't necessarily make it accessible. Paesaggi Futuri brings otherwise invisible information closer to the people and places it concerns.

Making data easier to see, explore and understand can shorten the distance between citizens and public administrations — turning transparency into awareness, and awareness into a new way of relating to public action.
